Since 1991, Kangaroo has organized an annual international mathematical competition for thousands of students in grades K-12. Kangaroo Math's focus is on improving students' math scores and teaching them new strategies for solving word and logic problems while helping them with critical thinking and gaining confidence in their math abilities.
1980 - Started a popular mathematical competition in Australia
Its history stretches back several decades. In the 1980’s, Peter O’Halloran, an Australian mathematician and teacher, began a popular mathematical competition in his country. The test was open to anyone who wanted to participate, and included engaging and thought-provoking questions which stemmed from mathematical areas of knowledge including algebra, geometry, and logic.
1991 - Started Kangaroo competition in France
In 1991, this idea was taken up in Paris, France. The competition began to be called “Kangaroo” because of its Australian origin. Very quickly, it spread throughout Europe, and presently over 6 million students throughout the world take part. In September 2012 a nice article was published in EMS Newsletter by Prof. Gregor Dolinar, the President of Kangourou Sans Frontiéres, where one could read about history, present and future of the competition worldwide.
2024 - The Kangaroo Maths Competition will take place in the Republic of Ireland for the first time.
Steve Sherman, who runs a STEM based NGO in South Africa has been visiting Ireland every year to run activities for National Maths and Science Week. He initiated an Olympiad which is specific to National Maths week and has over 80 000 students registered. He was accepted to run the Kangaroo Maths Competition in Ireland as he had the experience, the expertise and because he loves Ireland! Not only will he be running the event in Ireland for the first time but he is also looking to run the event Digitially! No need for papers to be printed, no need for teachers to do the marking and this makes for a very efficient event.
